So...when it comes to this board there are wolves and there are sheep. I, for one, am a sheep. If something works for one guy (or sometimes more) I like to try my hand at it. Whether thats a big fish caught in a lake near me or a particular style of fishing. Tonight, I decided to use my rare 0230 dismissal from work to test out the night bite.

Tried Diamond Lake in Mundelein, but the spot I tried was super dense with pads. I tried a frog but it never was really able to touch water so I called it after 10 minutes.

Headed to a pond in Buffalo Grove and tied on the dreaded Whopper Plopper. Arrived around 0330 and not long into my session got my first bite. Started reeling it and it felt like nothing was on the line, skated it across the top of the water to find a small crappie.

Continued on and got a nicer bite, turned out to be a 15" 1.7 lb largemouth. Had 'Nam like flashbacks of my hooking on Sunday, this bass was nearly the same size and hooked the same way. My lip gripper hasn't arrived yet but I was smart enough to just use pliers while removing the hooks

Was getting ready to call it a night, threw another cast and remembered while retrieving the bass my reel felt loose on its seat. Popped the lure 3 times and begun to tighten the reel down and hear a BIG hit. It was very dark and extremely foggy in BG so I never saw anything, not to mention I wasn't even looking at the water while tightening my reel down. Set the hook and man, there was some weight on the other end of the line. Wasn't sure if it was a lunker bass or something with teeth, but the only time it was above the water was right after setting the hook. Fought it awhile and flipped it on shore...a friggin CATFISH!?!? Never seen a cat hit topwater before. Wrestled the hook out (man their mouths are tough). Didn't bring my lip gripper for the scale and after the hook came out the smelly bastard started wiggling itself back toward the water and I was totally cool with that. Snapped a pic while it was struggling away and he eventually made it back in. Definitely a new PB cat!

Left just before 0430. About 1 hour of work, boy was that fun. Just wish I wasn't a first shifter! Glad I could get some work in tonight instead of today with the sunny and 90 forecast.

Chat-ter-bait. 2 local ponds and 1 lake and black blue chats work at all of them, of course they wouldn't in the pad field on Diamond lake but other than that give them a try. I hit another pond (this one definitely private, I used to live on it but just walked in no issues) from 1am to 2:30 and caught a dozen up to 2.4lbs with one monster boil 2' from my feet (had to change my underwear) I stocked 4 tigers and 6 pike in this pond 10yrs ago, one of them should still be alive, right? Didn't post it because other than maybe you, didn't appear anyone interested. Seems like you and I are the lone vampire anglers at the moment, lol bet that that cat caught you by surprise.

Aren't you forgetting someone? (the letters of his screen name actually are included in the letters of your screen name)

I lost my only darker chatterbait early yesterday! I was down to only a white one.

Like I said, I really wish I could do it more but working first shift really kills it. Worked 2nd shift last night and todays my only day off til next week, so it was only right to take advantage. Didnt fall asleep til 0630, almost went to Busse for the morning bite

As for the cat, it really did give me a frighten. I was praying it was a super heavy, super ticked bass but when it fought back I was thinking somehow it was something with teeth. Never in a million years would I have expected a catfish to hit a Whopper Plopper

Cats are the great fighters. Man at night though, you probably thought you had a 7lb bass.
I did! Reality set in when it started heading toward me and never breached the water on retrieve. It was dark and ridiculously foggy so I had to use my flashlight on my phone to see the hook and I didn't realize catfish eyes glow in light like...well...a cat. I assume they have night vision which is WILD to me.

That cat catch is super rad. That's one of those catches you'll talk about for a long time. Bravo!
Totally random. I've heard of cats grabbing crankbaits and swimbaits and whatnot that are sub surface but NEVER on something flopping on the very top of the water.

Pretty sure that's Green Lake on Deerfield. Only place I've seen with that weird waffle shaped shoreline. So it's you that I see sometimes fishing there at 2am after I drop off my buddy from a night of drinking.
Lol nah, not me. I hit there once very early in the season and snagged a dying catfish. I knew I could access it late this one day and stopped on a whim. Theres some decent potential there, but I can see it being highly pressured during the day.
