Stepped outside to a balmy 27 degrees this morning. Perfect trout weather. About a half an hour into my morning, I hooked what I thought was my personal best creek chub, AKA Dupage River trout, until it went airborne. Alas, I had myself my first honest-to-goodness Dupage River rainbow trout.

It was at this point that I decided to put down the bass gear for good and become a trout guy. I found near immediate success with not one, but two more beautiful rainbow trout.

No doubt stockers that got washed in from somewhere during the October flooding. I doubt I got the only three in the river so there's probably more swimming around. I also got into quite a largemouth bite between 9 and 10 a.m. of better-than-average sized bass for that river. Had a few shake off and all fish landed were between 13" and 15", many of them covered in mud. They're already hunkering down on the bottom of wintering holes but are very willing biters.

All fish caught on light jigs with 3" Gulp minnows. One smallmouth, five largemouth, and three rainbow trout. Yes I said it. I caught more Dupage River rainbow trout than smallmouth bass, cuz that's how I roll.

I've been fishing the Dupe since 2009 and in cold water since 2011 and never saw it before. My guess is they would never survive the summer heat. I assume they came from one one of the stocking locations and got into the river when it flooded from that heavy rain in October. Three out of about a 20 yard stretch so you have to wonder how many are out there.

Beautiful Fish. Thats Awesome that you Caught Several Rainbow Trout too. My Favorite Part of Fishing is you just never know what your going to catch next

Great post

Dang is that cool. Just off bass and trout same post. I ran into an old timer a couple years back on the kish and he shown me some bows he caught in the stretch he was fishing. Never would have believed it of I didn't see the pics and shoreline landscape I recognized. Similar situation he caught a few not just one. Actually 2 years in a row.

Possible golf course trout stockings? Lol.

They're probably just native migrating steelhead who went in through the locks downtown, spilled over the Bear trap dam into the Des Plaines, then spilled over the Brandon Dam dodging the bow and arrow death squads, who have decimated the big gar populations that used to patrol the south dpr, only in the last few years since it's legalization mind you. Then they merely jumped the big dam in Channahon and a few other obstacles to reach you.. :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

Real good stuff Jmdog.
