I've been reading a lot lately on how to fish (I'm still a novice) and it seems people like the Senko bait. But what size hook should a 5" Senko be used with? What's the best technique to use for the presentation of this? Is it less likely to snag seaweed when using this bait since the hook is usually buried into the worm's body as well?

I've checked Youtube.com for videos on using a Senko and there are some decent ones there, but wanted to see what the folks here thought as well.

I appreciate all the help everyone is giving to me so far on this forum! :)

3/0 or 4/0 all the way... MPlant, where were those weedless hooks when I needed one more fish at Deep last month? Now you pull 'em out!!!

I use big 4 or 5/0 gamakatsus. But I swear I had more landed fish back when I used smaller 1/0 straight shank hooks. Back then i coud do a quick jerk or a sweep and let the fish hook themselves. With the larger hooks you really have to do a power hookset.

I Use 3/0, 4/0, and sometimes 5/0 mattering on what size senko or plastic I am using. Slider is right about having to have some power into the hookset when you go a little bigger. I like to use Gama Wide Gap and rig my senko's weedless most of the time. The only time I wacky rig is when I am sight fishing. Hope you nail em next time out!

Wow, I must be in a huge minority, but I use a mere 1/0, and I really prefer (as mentioned in my previous post) Gamakatsu "skip-gap" hooks. I fish mostly forest preserve lakes where the fish are both smaller, and very wary. I've tried bigger hooks, but it seemed to hurt not only strikes, but hook-ups. I swear by the 1/0 skip-gaps. They really help keep the worm in place, so you're not re-adjusting on every cast. Hope this helps.

it depends on the size of the senko and the depth of water you are fishing. if you're throwing 3-4 inch senkos use 1/0-3/0. The deeper you're fishing the larger the hook.

5 in senko's 3/0-5/0 depending on depth again. I usually use 5/0 when fishing weedlines.

If you're using the senko's in super heavy cover throw 5 /0 superline hooks with braid.

It also depends on what type of gear you are using. Usually with spinning gear a smaller hook is recommended like a 1/0. With a baitcaster 3/0 - 5/0. Like Bartmandude said, the skip-gap hooks are a great product.

Oh... one more thing... Senko's come in all sorts of colors and styles. Is there one that people like better? Is there a "model" number to make it easier to locate at the store? I plan to rig it "weedless" with the hook in the body (not wacky-style.)

Three quick things:

1. I agree with Doc on spinning gear/light-line for using smaller hooks. I've also gone to larger when I WANT a faster sink-rate, but this is very rare.
2. You CAN absolutely use the 1/0 even w/ a 5" senko. I do this all the time.
3. Color: It's hard to say how important this is. I've had days where it did seem to matter, and days when they seemed to hit any color. That said, I've had the most consistent luck w/ watermelon/black-flake. If that's not available, green-pumpkin black flack. After that, black/blue-flake. I fish in places with really clear water. If it's murky, I'd favor the black.

I tried the Senko's today at the Skokie Lagoons and was sucessful in catching my first bass (and first fish this season)!

As you may know, I'm still a novice at fishing... but I did go fishing years ago.

Anyway, having gone at least 7 or 8 times this year so far and getting nothing but the skunk, today I landed my first bass ever! It was small, perhaps only 8 or 9 inches, but I was happy to get something! After taking a photo, the bass was released.

My relatives were even luckier! My nephew caught a bass that was 15 inches and about 2 lbs or so...

And, my cousin-in-law caught first a very small pike:

And moments later after releasing the pike, he caught a 24.5" Walleye!

This was our most successful outing this season!

Oh... we were in lagoon 5, I believe. My nephew and I were fishing with 4" black Senkos and my cousin-in-law with some other kind of artificial plastic lure. First time for us with the Senkos.
