Lol wow this one flew off the rails
It's cold and we're bored. Go catch some fish and give us a report. I have more packing and moving to do this weekend and every weekend through the month, so I'm basically out of commission other than maybe an afternoon outing. When is your vaca over with?

I suppose the real question should be...why risk It? Why not do a verticle lift if that's your only option. Of course just keeping the fish in the water or supporting it with two hands would be even better.

Im just trying to promote the safe handling of fish.

Why risk injuring the fish?
I see a fish with it's mouth held open wide with the thumb, but the weight of the fish is upon the knuckles of the angler, not it's jaw.

I gotta wonder if DonR knows those fish were literally ripped out of moderate to fast current by their jaws. Coupled with a few holes in the jaw and possibly a poked eyeball or gill while fighting for its life. :D

No one releases more bass safely in the streams of the Southwest Burbs than JmDog, just saying..

RonG's assessment is correct. If I tilt a fish at all, it's weight is supported on my hand somehow. And there's never enough extension to stress the jaw anyway. You can rest easy that I'm cognizant of fish positioning when I take pics DonR. Additionally, I typically have the fish unhooked with two pics snapped in 30 seconds or less. If for some reason the process is taking longer, I dunk the fish for a few seconds and sway it a bit to let it catch a breath.

Yup, DonR knows how the fish are caught. I've caught thousands of smallies in dozens of rivers in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Indiana and Ohio.

I used to lift fish on a 45 degree angle. I've heard a crunching sound. Guessing that's not good. Did some research. Found better ways to fight fish more quickly. Pinch down barbs, hold fish correctly, etc.

I think the 45 degree angle thing mostly stems from tourney guys and fishing shows. Hopefully someday the safe handling of fish will catch on with those guys as well.

Someone posted an article on here last year about exactly what you're talking about. Using your 4 fingers and tucking them under the "chin" provides great leverage and holds the majority of the fish's weight (and seems to be a "tranquilizer" for a flopping fish ) Now, when you're talking those big 5-6 lb.+ bass, their center of gravity is much lower and you're not getting the same support, which leads to unnecessary torque that results in sore or broken jaws.

Sorry for the quasi-physics lesson lol.
