Per Heddonfrogs request, a new thread

Had 0 intentions of making an effort today but this fishing stuff is worse than crack. Afternoon warmed up to 84 without a ton of humidity & a strong breeze making it not feel oppressive, so I caved to the crave.
Went to different water with the intention of exploiting the prespawn ditch-pickle bite. Caught a handful of less than photo-worthy participant larrys on the chatterbait, & then it happened...
While trying to ski the bait above the shoreline scum & just as I was lifting it out, those familiar black bars, greenish/yellow body, & orangish red fins & frantic pace that is reminiscent of a perch on meth swiped at & tore off the paddle of my chatterbait trailer (gambler ugly otter). Having no other trailers or baits in my pocket, made another cast along the same line & saw 2 peacocks swimming alongside it curiously. At the very least I had to walk a whole 1/4mile back to my tackle bin (aka my car),re-trailer my chatterbait & stock a pocket with spares, or........hang up the largemouth gear & go a different direction! Even though this isnt typically my prime peacock water in the neighborhood, decided on plan B & grabbed my ML spinning gear, a 1/4oz bucktail jig & went at it.
Wasnt exactly a stellar outing #'s -wise, but did catch a small handful of mostly smaller peacocks, a couple were decent. Right as sunset was taking over had a thump on the bucktail, set the hook, & the line instantly started peeling out with the rod going nuts. I was sure it had to be a big snakehead but it seemed a bit speedy for that. A second later a tank of a peacock started trying to cartwheel. Took an honest few minutes to bring him to the steep bank. Usually with the 15lb ande leader I use, rarely is an occasion I cant just hoist them up the mostly steep banks, but this 1 was a touch big for that. Worked down the slope and got him to the bank. Was in the range of 5lbs Id guess. They do get bigger than that here, but not too often. Aside from kings/trout on the lakefront, cant recall a freshwater fish that scrapped like this brute anytime recently. They put a largemouth to shame, and solidly surpass a smallmouth, IMO, in terms of speed & power. Was a pleasant surprise on a day I had no plans to go.

That's awesome. I recently got back into fish keeping and about a 12 inch peacock goes for about $100 bucks at the pet stores.
Ugh true story. They have em from time to time for $30 and they're never longer than your pinkie and they don't take on their trademark colors until much later. I got one of the little ones last year and it quickly became high end filet mignon for my gar

That big one must have been a friggin blast on that lighter gear holy cow. Great catch.

Been trying new water the past week with spotty results. Plenty of dink sized LM & peacocks with a smattering of snakeheads here & there. Starting to see more LM making & defending nests the past week, too, but have been setting afoot with peacock gear mostly.

Stumbled on to a new stretch this afternoon & was pleasantly surprised at its productivity. This canal goes on for miles & I only covered about a mile of it today, looking fwd to testing it out further.
Actually acquired bass-thumb today, probably caught about 20 peacocks, most of them small but 3-4 of them were pretty decent, + a surprise! Everything caught on 1/4oz white/purple bucktail.

Came around a corner to notice this guy watching

And, a surprise appearance by the freshwater marlin of palm beach county AKA the Clown knife!

These fish are very weird & very cool to catch! They really take to the air & put up quite the tussle!

So glad my new vise showed up when it did! Need to make more of these.

Do you ever catch Jaguar Guapote fish? Those are cool looking fish
Yes. Have caught a few of them. Feels weird catching them after having kept them in aquariums years ago. Also saw some Oscars today. Caught 2 mayan cichlids yesterday. The canals here almost seem like the freshwater aisle in the pet shop.

Few from the last couple days

Would love to throw some topwater baits, but so much water lettuce floating thru currently, anything with a treble is a deal-breaker, & t-rigged baits are less than ideal for peacocks. So, the white bucktail with purple hackle core will have to do!

A couple hit & run outings over the weekend. Nothing stellar, but a couple decent fish.

Please excuse the following pose. It was a text response to a friend from home damning me for not being around & available to help with his snow removal.

A mayan cichlid that ate my crappie jig. These things are like a bluegill on steroids

Left the peacocks alone for an evening, morning sortie to try & get a big Largemouth. Wasnt particularly productive, but caught a couple decent fish, but no giants. Frogging in the dark, & chatterbait under overcast skies

Are there any native bluegills left? Or get pushed out by all the exotics?
Yes, there are still some bluegills & shellcrackers, but they definitely seem fewer than invasives. Walking the banks in much of the canal systems you see more tilapia, mayan, midas cichlids than native species.

Stopped & made a couple casts at a newly discovered bridge bridge today. Nailed these 2 mini-tanks on back to back casts, then proceeded to get broken off on a monster peacock that chaffed my leader around the bridge pilings.

Fishing kind of sucked today. Drop in temps & steady bouts of rain for 2 days seems to have hampered peacock fishing. Caught 1 that may not have been 1lb. Tried briefly throwing a swim jig with only 1 follow from a fairly big LM to show for it. Decided to throw a few casts at a spot on the way home. When I pulled up alongside the bank & opened the car door, I saw a wide push of water moving. Looked down & saw what looked to be 5 or 6 big oscars cruising along. Took my crappie rod out of car & put a cast ahead of their path. As my jig was approaching the general area I saw half the group start racing towards my jig. Felt a aharp tap & set the hook. Really put up quite the tussle on the UL setup & ripped a bit of drag. Quite a bit more power than a crappie, for sure.
So here it is, my PB Oscar! Assuming its a red tiger strain.

Ive caught some smaller 1s in the past, but this was the biggest 1 ive caught or seen. Would put it at >1.5+, & <2lbs.
Couple of observations:
Strong as mule!
Not fun experience trying to grab 1 by the lip....
Very sharp gill-plate & dorsal spine!
Slimey as hell!

Is the polar vortex we're seeing right now going to get as south as you?
Dave,
Yes, & its been horrible! I think it got all the way down into the upper 50s the last 2 nights. I fear I may have to dig out a hoodie if this keeps up much longer............. 8)

Honestly, I have not a clue if our recent cooler weather is in anyway related to whats affecting you folks up there. What we have temp-wise the last few days is actually more typical winter weather than its been thus far.
