I had a small button buck bed almost directly under my stand for about 1/2 hr. I don't shoot the buttons - let 'em grow a real rack. Out of nowhere he jumped up & sprinted down the trail. about 30 seconds later I see him trying to make friends with a nice size doe. She came in & stood slightly qartering away at 20 yds. Whack!

Nice job on the doe! I was out for the morning opener but only saw a yearling doe. My buddy saw about 5 or 6, but only one was a small buck (6 point basket rack). No shots were taken at any of them. Hoping to get out in the next couple of days and take an early buck.
Enjoy your venison.

I'd love to be able to share, but the tournament dates haven't worked out for me this year since way back at Bussee - wasn't that like July or something? :)

Maybe we need to finally get our act together on that non-tournament meet-up at Delevan or Geneva?

Nice Doe RingNeck... I just woke up from my weekend trip. Was out in Pike county. Was in my Viper SS tree stand with barely any wind in my face by 4:00am just waiting it out. By sunrise I tried rattling in a buck way out in the distance with no avail. I was able to watch him for a about an hour with my binocs. He looked like a 6 pt wich is a waste of my time to take him. I must have seen about 10 doe the whole weekend, Nothing worth shooting as I was looking for a Buck to start my season off with. Saw a Basket Racked Buck about 8 pt's about 60 yards away with my binocs. He moved in closer, I drew back waiting for a clear shot and for him to turn broadside, he spotted me and ran off! :x Those bucks keep getting smarter and smarter, Even with my Mossy Oak Break Up, he still spotted me. :? Other than that, I took a couple acorns on the head as usuale! LOL I am heading out this coming friday morning and pulling another weekend hunt. I should bring in an 8 point this weekend. You can tag along to pike county if you want. Instead of sleeping in the trucks, we got a hotel room. It's Public Land and there is some great bars not too far from the hotel. Let me know if your up for it.

Dave

PS: I cracked my whisker biscuit casing on my bow :(

BTW, was taken up on your buddys private land? Room for one more? :p

It is uncanny how they can spot us, even up in trees.

The place I hunt is really the father-in-law of my buddy. It took me 3 years to get in there. He's a great guy, but I don't think I could get anyone else out there.

I doubt I'll be able to make a trip to Pike. I'm headed out of town a few times in the upcoming month or so - but good luck to you!

I was using Rage 3-blade mechanical heads for the first time. They opened up very nicely on the entrance. The exit was much smaller. It was not a complete pass through - but it did make an exit. Unfortunately I never found the arrow, so I can't confirm whether that means there was some blade breakage.

Yea, It's been hard for me to find Private Land that i can get access too. Haha. Even when I offer Cash to hunt on there property, They don't want the bullshit of it or if I fell from my tree stand, even though I always wear a harness.

For the Broadheads, I was going to give the new Maniacs a shot, but I went with XP125's made by X'bow-XPR. They are suppose to have a folding mechanism that opens the blades after entrance so the arrow is guarenteed to not fall out. With a close 20 yard shot, I have heard I should be able to put it right through him and almost drop the deer within seconds with a good shot. I will have to find out. I will let ya know what i think of the heads. I might switch up my sight to my old 4 pin sight and get a little more draw. Right now im shooting with a 3. keep in touch man, Good Luck!

Finally got my clearance/approval from the land owner for LaSalle Co. by Seneca.
I'll get some hunting time this year, at least next year my clock will start Oct. 1st.

Tough to find private land withour hassles within an hour or so from Chicago.

I saw the recent numbers report that it was #4 in the state for deer so far this year.

All counties reporting seemed lower than last year but they will catch up.

I'll get my stand up just as its getting good.
:D

Good luck this fall!

I didn't make it out this past week, im kinda bummed out about that, But yea... There is plenty of time. i have a couple permant stands up now chained to a couple trees in Pike County. But i only use my Viper Climber now. LOL Deer should start moving really soon as this weather is just awesome right now! I actually just got me a turkey tag last week as I have seen soo many big gobblers lately. Right under my stand, I could have taken a whole bunch if i wanted to within a 10-20 yard shot. I saw some turkeys today in roselle, IL. I have never seen anything like it before, right in front of someones house, there was 6 of them, I slammed on my breaks and almost shit a brick. It was tempting... But I couldn't. How the hell do you see turkey in the suburbs? LOL i just dont get it! But I am getting Coyotes in my back yard on the golf course at night. i hear them howling and have seen them, It makes ya wanna drop one! 8) Well now im rambling since I can talk Hunting all damn day long. I even dream it! LOL Take Care and Good Luck Out there Guys!
