I've never fished them but if you wait till the fish start to spawn you'll know quickly if they are worth checking out as you should see the fish in the shallows. As far as legal, As long as it isn't posted, I'd assume they are fine to fish. I know that some people fish the industrial park ponds in Lincolnshire.
Agree with Tater. Most do not mind so much on the weekends (those that are not posted), but you will get chased away at times from security folks.
Not sure specifically where off of 45 you are but most of the ponds in Buffalo Grove are posted no fishing. The state record largemouth was caught in lincolnshire right next to the border of buffalo grove in the 70's and that has also has been no fishing for a good 30 years. :(
Some years ago I checked out a pond alond Devon. I could not have been there more than 5 minutes, just looking, no gear. A guard showed up and said he saw me on the cameras and wanted to know what I was doing. I told him I was checking it out, so I could fish it at a later date. He said, no way, its not allowed.
Do you even fish, ffishman?

I grew up 2 minutes from the pond where this was caught. You can't even get out of your car with a pole there without the cops rolling up. Someone drowned there awhile back, and they watch it very carefully.

Nope, 1 warning is enough for me.
