DPR Smallies

I usually find myself working the Des Plaines River later in the year from my kayak, after the inland lakes become hot and stagnant from the summer heat. However, this year i've wanted to do some wading of the DPR and hopefully find a smallie or two early in the season. The results, so far, have exceeded expectations. And just like river smallies do, these things fight like hell!

Wading really helps with the approach as it offers a better chance to really slow down and target specific spots with a bit more finesse than i'm used to with my run and gun tactics for pike using the kayak.

Good stuff Jason. Welcome back.

Awesome! I've never ran into a smallie in the Lake Co where i predominantly fish which is the reason I want to try some downstream stretches of the river this year.
Curious what your bait of choice was/is at this time? Thanks.

Orange spinnerbait, very tight to shore, rocky areas.

Hell yeah! We drove down Friday afternoon, pulled into the lot and they started Theme. Great weekend, weatherwise too.
