First 2023 topwater smallie––and on a buzz plug!

I got one this morning on top in the Aurora area. A solid 14 incher maybe. Hiding in the slacker water behind a bridge piling.

I got him on a lure I've never tried. The funny-looking buzz plug. It kind of has the action of a buzzbait, but it floats, so I can work it slow and pause it if I want. Sort of a cheaper alternative to a whopper plopper. Wanted to try something different and it paid off.

I tried for 1.5 hours at various spots and found the only rogue topwater fish in Aurora. But it's starting!

Nice to see them on top. This is about the time of year I usually start getting them on poppers at the local ponds.

Way to go!
Is that a vintage lure? I might be mis-remembering, but I think I've seen a version of it in a collectors book, or online somewhere.

I don't know about vintage. A quick Google search shows articles about it from 10 years ago, so it's at least that old. But I can't readily find the introduction date. You may be thinking of the Jitterbug or Hula Popper by the same company (Arbogast), which are vintage.
I have that same lure! But haven’t caught a thing on it yet, at least now I know it works, will give it a run.

Went out with my buddy Monday evening to a local pond, he asked if it was too early for topwater, I said let the fish decide, he caught four nice largies on a green torpedo.

No, I'm familiar with the Jitterbug and Hula-Popper. My dad's tackle box was well stocked with them. Unique looking lure, though. 👍

Looking forward to using my baby torpedo again. It became my go-to topwater last year on the Fox.

Got one this morning at a different bridge. This time on the whopper plopper 60.

Nice catches! 🙂👍
Got a smally today at the end of the Canoe chute at Yorkville dam. I was using a Bandit 100 Squarebill in Brown Crawdad/Orange Belly color.
But that was it in 1.5 hrs of fishing. It was so bright sunny Midday today that makes it tough.
Also another guy got one below the dam with a Tube in green pumpkin during midday.
