Hit the River Forest stretch Thursday evening. On my 1st cast (white chatterbait with a green twister) a 24-26" pike slammed the lure. After a brief fight I went to grab it to take the hook out. Just as I got my hand on it it gave a twitch, threw the hook and slid down the bank into the water. Somehow the hook wound up in the base of my left thumb. YEOW!

In keeping with the most hallowed of all fishing traditions since I caught one on my first cast I got skunked for the next 2 hours.

Went back yesterday evening. This time I crossed over to the island (the water is really down) & fished my way along its western side. I was throwing a jig & twister (orange/yellow) & getting taps from dink rockies. At the low end of the island I switched to a white/silver buzzbait & cast just below the island. Got 3 hits in a row but it didn't take the hook. So I tossed it right back to the same place. This time it got slammed by an 18-22" hammer handle. Nice fight from a skinny fish.

No more action for the night.

Glad you're alright. I've done it twice not fun
Thanks. It looked a lot worse than it was. Bled like a SOB when I pulled it out. Stopped after a few minutes. I thought I'd have some swelling the next day but it didn't happen.

Haven't done anything like that in decades. Last time it was a hook under my right pinky finger nail. That one really hurt.

So nice to know there's at least one sympathetic soul on WCF. Not like the rest of those unfeeling bastards.

Another reason why I've fished barbless hooks for years now. Hope your Tetanus shots are up to date.

Yanker: All my hooks are barbless. Made pulling it out easy but still bled like an SOB.

But joke's on me - it was my left pinky that got f'd up 30 years ago.
