So the lady and I went camping this weekend! We couldn't have asked for a better weekend. The rain held off and we didn't get a drop. We went back to the same campground we tried last year in Morris. It's a 'nothing special' kinda place, but there is no restrictions (well almost none). The only thing you are required to do is pick up after yourself, or they won't allow you to come back. Easy enough....just be respectful.

well last year Jenna and I brought our spinning rods and had no clue what we were going to do. L The last visit we were throwing tiny jigs all day going after the small creek chubs. We didn't figure there was much else so we just had fun catching these little guys. This time we decided to do the same thing but with small flies. We figured it worked in the smokey mountains why not in this creek.

Well we ran through small fish to big fish we weren't really expecting. In fact we came up to this hole........

Ok pause....I should probably start by saying at this particular point in the day Jenna was "done" with fishing. After she saw me struggle through some rocks and hairy wading areas to get to this hole....she wanted no more. So she sat on the bank while I told her "just a few minutes, and we'll go". Well the skies opened up and angels came down and FISH ON! (This was super exciting...here I was catching minnows all day when low and behold there was a giant on my line)

My new 4wt St.Croix is arched and holding strong. I see flashes of silver as we tangle....I got it in and sure enough it was a good sized white bass! Who knew! I get a pic and revive him for a minute or two (I played him for a while).

At this point jenna tells me nice job babe, can we go now?! Sure hun just a couple more casts.....then BAMF POW fish on again! Another white bass.....then a 3rd, 4th, and 5th!

By this point jenna is casting and pushing me aside telling me to stop being selfish and give her the spot! Then same things for her...Fish on...fish on fish on. We ran through about 15 WB's in 30 minutes! So much fun on the fly too! oh( she was using a 5wt cahill 8' with a prestige 5wt reel)

It was really nice to see her pullin them in as I was able to critique her a bit with each one unttil she was playing each one like a champ. In fact...she said at the end on our walk back...."babe, rainbow trout better watch out when I get down there!"

I hooked into a few smallies down there too...and jenna caught the smallest ones.

Soo here's the weekend.....

Sounds like an awesome trip. Wish I could get my wife in the woods.

Just curious, but what are you doing that you need to be unrestricted?
Nothin bad...but for instance camp by the K3 and thess are your do's n don'ts

Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the park and campgrounds at all times.
Because the Kankakee River is unpredictable with fast currents, drop offs and a rocky bottom, no swimming is allowed in any area, including Rock Creek.
All motorized vehicles are prohibited on all of the Kankakee River State Park trails. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the bicycle trail.
Quiet hours are 10 p.m. - 7 a.m. Vehicle traffic is not allowed during quiet hours.
* While groups of 25 or more are welcome and encouraged to use the park's facilities, they are required to register in advance with the site office to avoid crowding or scheduling conflicts.
* At least one responsible adult must accompany each group of 15 minors.
* Pets must be kept on leashes at all times.

I get why they have them....but I'm not an irresponsible party that will go chopping down trees, throwing crap in the river yadda yadda. If we want to stay up late and drink and play games louder than a hushed tone...its cool. B/c there's no one else to really bother.

Nice job! When and where are you going trout fishing!?
Well if that's you suggesting you'd be interested I'd say anywhere anytime!

I do have a trip planned to Gatlinburg for July 9-15 got trout.

Ps those shrimp you tied me worked well not only saltwater but for the white bass as well!

What a great post!

This post illustrates perfectly why River and Creek fishing is such a blast. You trod on through small trickles, flicking creek chubs off of your hook and moving on, around the next turn. the next riffle, searching poking around then BAM!
