I know July is not over yet, but I threw in the towel for the month already. The dpr shot up again a week ago and even though its receding now its still not where I'd like it to be.
July was the month of Dad. Took my old man(68yrs old) out on the fox and the Des Plaines for some good bites. He's been retired a few years now and is always game to river fish.
In early July we did some frog fishing the scum in and around Des Plaines Lake area because the bass bite was good around the weeds. We also tossed spinnerbaits along the weed edges for dogs and pike.
In mid july we hit the fox river in the jonboat. The water was still kind of high and stained for mid summer, but smallie fishing was better than the last couple julys imo. Average catch size has been great. I've done a lot of damage with 1/2oz swim jigs and powerbait toads, which is kind of like a double tailed keitech with better scent imo. The brown green color scheme is perfect for rivers. My old man likes a more of a reaction strike and he caught all his fish with a chartreuse chatter or spinnerbait. Best pattern was chunk rock seawalls with decent current or swirls.
A rogue fox river largemouth.
