FYI. The DNR has changed the regulations for 2023 regarding the walleye population effecting April 1. They have lifted the 18” to 26” protected slot and now allow 1 fish greater than or equal to 18”. This news came a little late for me because I released a couple of 20 inchers this week, but that’s okay with me. Kudos to all anglers that are aware of and play by the rules which the DNR initiates. This regulation change is proof that we can make a difference.

regulations are for people who follow the rules! now all the IDNR has to do is enforce the regulations on all the poachers!! for enforcing the rules the IDNR is useless!
for 20 years the DNR has been stocking the river with walleyes and at the same time guys are taking home walleyes loaded with eggs and females that can't spawn!
why not have a closed season like Wisconsin than maybe there would be more walleyes in the river!

when the IDNR stocked Monster with walleyes the boaters were taking them out and they were only 11 inches! regulations are a joke if they can't be enforced!
It does seem futile at times and I agree enforcement is an issue. Like all Illinois bureaucracies budgets and staffing is a problem. I know some DNR employees and their hearts are in the right place.
There is no shortage of dumbasses with a fishing pole. The ones who ignore regulations are the same people who leave empty bait containers and beer cans at the shore.
The fact remains that the regulation change is driven by a fish population study and its a win for responsible anglers

I agree with the need for better enforcement. I've been getting my license almost every year since I turned 16 (37 now, do the math) and I've been yet to be asked for my license at the dozens of lakes and probably thousands of outings I've been on. Although I've only harvested on outings on a charter in the big lake, it would be nice to know that anyone was out enforcing and making sure rules and regs are being followed.

In the meantime, I've held at least a dozen 3 day to 1 week licenses in states I've traveled to where i do some fishing including Wisconsin, Florida, Texas, and Arizona and have been asked for my license almost every time. Why can't we get it right?

I agree with you, but as for Wisconsin and Florida. Especially Florida, there is a lot of money coming in from people flocking there specifically for fishing. So they have a lot more money to put towards protecting there fish and waters.
Wisconsin, definitely not as much as Florida, but they still do get more money because it’s a “fishing destination” that many people go to, so it benefits them to keep those fish and waters protected.

Illinois… (cricket sounds)
Whose coming to Illinois to fish? I know people do. But I certainly would not consider us a Fishing Destination that people are really amped to come to.

So there’s not much incentive for Illinois to pump in a bunch of staff and money into protecting stuff more.

Hey, I want things to improve. I actually love Illinois. Born and raised here. I’ve always loved our Rivers, Lakes, and Streams. I’ve loved the Beautiful nature that surrounds them. And it grieves me seeing things go down hill. But other than me being a responsible and caring fisherman and outdoorsman I don’t know what else to do.

A big issue for me is on the Rock River. Once a terrific Flathead fishery. I would go on guide trips almost 4 times a year every year. Now it has fallen alot!

And I will tell you right now the biggest cause of the downfall, besides the train accident years ago.

A cat fisherman is only allowed, I don’t know I forget, Something like 2-4 poles in a boat. But a limb line fisherman can use up to 50 hooks on limb lines. FIFTY! And they can spread them down super long lengths of the river. And every single one of those fish that gets hooked on those lines dies. Their either being eaten or they die on the hook because they tear themselves up being on the hook too long. These guys also don’t care if it’s a 50 lb Flathead. They are taking it any way.

They specifically place these lines exactly where Flathead feed at night. They are sitting ducks. And with 50hooks you are definitely getting some for sure.

So how is it that a boat can have 2-4 poles, which will be mostly catch and release. But limb liners can have 50 lines with hooks out. It’s devastating the population. And they can’t catch these people cause it’s in the middle of the night in the forest.

50 hooks should never be allowed. Never. Especially when all those fish are going to be eaten and disappear.
