Wow, is all I can say. Now I know why people love going to the Mexican lakes for fishing. A group of 10 of us went to Lake Comedero. We stayed at Lake Comedero lodge. The scenery was beautiful and really, the only thing that sucked about this trip is the ride to and from the Lake. It is about a 3 hour drive from Mazetlan with about 1.5 hours of it being on roads not paved and so forth. I've heard how Comedero was dangerous and what not but I never felt that at all. I actually felt very safe and didn't even worry about that kind of stuff. The lodge itself is located very close to the lake and in the morning, lunch and evening they pick you up with this extended golf cart that fit about 8-10 people just fine. The food was excellent and the owners did an excellent job making you feel like you are at your second home. Good people. Now to the fishing.. I've heard at this time the spawning is pretty much done so it was difficult to be on the larger fish. Actually, most of the larger fish caught seemed to be spawned out. As a group we caught 4-5 9lbers, some in the 8's, others in the 7's and a good amount from 5-6lbs. The first day for me was the best. I caught a 7.8 on a pop-r in the morning, besting my personal best of an incredible 4lb Smile The morning bite was so much fun. This was my first time I've caught fish on poppers(PopR, Rico and Chug Bugs were the ticket) and it was great. Lizards were the key after the topwater bite died. I was using 8" watermelon lizards and it was literally 1 fish after an another but unfortunately most of these bass were small. In the afternoon I ended up flipping a lizard by a tree, hit the branch in the water and BOOM I catch a 8.6lb bass. It was incredible. My partner on the boat caught a fat 6lb and also an 8lb bass. The 2nd and 3rd days for some reason were not kind to us. Others in the group kept catching the big ones but after that my biggest was 4lb. My partner did end up catching another 5 and 6lber but all the rest were small. Next up.. Lake Guerrero in the 3rd week of March.
