Next weekend i plan on heading down to Burnham to do some fishing. Now with all of this warm weather were suppost to be having, will the ice be melted by next weekend. I hope it is If it is i hope to just walk in between the docks and either perch fish or go for smallies. I probally will do some salmon fishing while im there. Hell, if there are even carp in the water thats what i'll go after. Just lookin to get something big. Now with last year being the first year i fished lake michigan i don't know anything about spring fishing for salmon. Is it to early? How do I fish there for perch? Would I be better fishing for salmon or what? I would like to just keep tossin a jig under the docks and hoping for a smallie. Any suggestions or tips and pointers would be appreciated.

You'll be able to Catch coho Salmon, And brown trout right when ice melts! You'll see a lot of guys power lining for them but you can also take them with rod and reel. usually the jumbo Perch don't start showing till about mothers day, but before then You can Get the coho salmon, And Brown trout. About a week or two after ice leaves is when i'll hit the smallies But Really don't start full-time until april.

for perch you can use small plastics, minnows, anything along those lines when the jumbos come in you can throw inline spinners, crank baits etc.

Don't forget about the favorite of all time fish out there "Steelies" the steelhead will be moving in and out all winter and and early spring

what could i use for bait when fishing for these salmon you speak of and steelhead. Whats good. Spawn sacks or just plain old spoons

fishinnut28, for the steelhead in the spring, I would use frozen cocktail shrimp from the Market on a fixed float. Otherwise I usually head to the rivers and tackle them on a fly rod. I am sure spawn still works around this time of year. I just haven't done it at all in the harbors. Usually in the fall is when I only fish for them and shrimp n spawn worked in the harbors around that time of year. You can catch salmon. But when anyone gets that steelhead, it's a pride n joy since salmon are known to be caught. Everyone that fish's Salmon is twice as happy when they catch a Steely, the fight on there runs is twice intense as they will shoot out of the water like a bullet and change direction and swim like crazzy the other direction as you are trying to reel in your slack line. These fish are crazzy man! LOL. Do a little research on Google and go from there. There is really great info you can find from a Bioligists that has studied these fish over the spring periods and how they react. Cause all the info I gave you now is almost all I have for the harbors in the spring. If we were talking steelhead on the fly, then that's another story and gameplan

Hey guys,

Don't let the open water fool you, Burnham was 95% covered with ice on sunday morning. Pay close attention to local lake in the neighhood.. That will tell u when Burnham is ready.

Larry, you and Tim better kill em out there I should have a good outing tonight too. By the way. That crappie was when i was setting my tip-up up. I was free handing it and saw him on the Zercom come up n hit the roach. It was pretty cool. I wish you woulda been there. We always have next year though. But this spring should be awesome!

Yes. Actually its allopen now. My buddy was out there today. One Steelie at the pipe and that was it for him but he did mention several people had there limits of browns. Spoons were the ticket this monring as he had mentioned. With the West winds most of the ice glaceries will be pushed out to the main lake and the water will be clearer which is KEY. If the water is muddy or stain dont bother. Chances are slim to none when the water is muddy or stain. Its going to be a nice evening 40 degrees with winds coming from the west at 5-10 mph. I have a good feeling about tonight. Hopefully I can beat my best brown at 18#'s last year on spawn. Will post a report.

I went out to Diversey Harbor last night to test the waters with a small twister tail, but I came up with nothing. Not even a bite.

Anyway, it was a nice evening, so I got a chance to take some pictures of Diversey Harbor. As of last night, the ice was completely gone on the north end, but south and between the docks, there's still ice. The lakeside, by the long breakwall is completely open.

Next time I'll have some pictures of fish!
