With the impending lousy Saturday Chicago area weather, my girlfriend and I headed south to where better weather was predicted. We only had to travel just past Champaign, IL to a small town called Monticello, IL. We found a city run park/forest called Lodge Park which is located along the Sangamon River.
We did some geocaching, hiking, sightseeing, etc. Towards the entrance was a medium sized pond with a few "bucketheads" and their huge bobbers doing some fishing. My girlfriend suggested we stop and cast a line while she soaks up some sun.
The pond was shallow and mucky, but could see lots of bedding/spawning bass. Cast a few senko's but hardly any interest. Jigs didn't work either. Finally tied on a Flick-Shake worm and that did the trick. Landed 3 largemouth bass all between 14" and 16". Felt great!
Lodge Park was a great find and also has camping allowed. We will no doubt be returning to enjoy this scenic park to do some hiking, more fishing and camping.
