Missouri ponds: frogging fun and slaying with soft plastics

For the 2nd year in a row, my brother and I each traveled from our separate locations to meet at the Kansas City, MO airport. We then drove an hour or so to ponds near Maryville. In 4 days, we ended up landing 47 largemouth bass and 1 crappie and missed many more, especially on frogs.

Fish on frogs
Our first year, the buzzbait was king. This year, the ponds were much more choked with weeds, even though we went a week earlier. So frogs worked much better than any other topwater. We had many many blowups and missed a lot of them, but that's the fun and challenge of frog fishing!

Soft plastics
These were also very effective in the weeds and around the weed edges. Also lost many trying to get them through the weeds, but a lot of fun!

Sunrises and surroundings
Sunrises were often spectacular. And you can see the weed cover in some of these photos. No matter how thick the weeds, bass would shoot out to attack our frogs. A great trip, which we'll do again next year!

That's pretty cool that you and your brother still hang out together and go fishing. Looks like a great time. 👍

I’m curious as to how you settled on your destination. Were you originally from that area? Are the ponds public?

The ponds are public. They're part of a state conservation area. There's also a 110 acre lake there.

Last year, my brother and I originally planned to meet in North Dakota, inspired by a fishing YouTuber there. But as the trip time approached, we realized the ND area would be too flooded both from shore and if we brought a canoe.

So we abandoned that idea and started looking for other places. My brother was meeting his son later that May in Missouri for disc golf at a well-known disc golf course there. So we started looking for places in Missouri and stumbled upon this conservation area using Google. Turned out to be a great place for us!
