Perching 5/30 - Slim Pickens

It was a tougher day on the lakefront this morning. I heard reports from various harbors that things were generally on the slow side.

I fished for a few hours this morning. Good amount of guys out there, but not too many perch. One guy got a limit (you know who you are) and the rest of us were picking up one here, one there.

Took home 6 perch. Biggest was 13.75". A real chunker

Jig bite was tough for me. Picked up a couple including some dinks. Shad raps worked best for me. Lost two jumbos and landed 4 good sized perch.

May try again tonight...

That's because you are too young to get it.

You spelled 'slim pickin's' as Slim Pickens. That's a pic of Slim Pickens riding a nuke like a rodeo horse in Dr. Strangelove.

I never saw the movie, but I remember seeing the clip on the Tonight Show when I was a kid. A classic...
I'd love to see how perch are caught with shad raps. I've always worked them with soft shell of minnows so something new is always welcomed!

The feeling is incredible. What I do is use an 18" leader rigged with a swivel to my main line. I add 3 large bass split shots right above the swivel. This keeps my shad rap lower. At first glance, you might think I was trying to snag fish...constant hard jerks and while retrieving. But man, when the perch hit, they slam it. With this method, you're all but guaranteed that all the fish that hit the shad rap are jumbo perch - no dinks or gobies!
Great job on getting some in tough times :)
I'm south and 63rd is a lil closer than Navy pier.
Like you guys it seems i share the pier with only a few casters and more gulls.

I do like that spot, lots of deep water to the east and easy access by the harbor.

Gotta get back there soon!

:D
i like 63rd a lot.

one of the regulars once told me, "hey, the fish aren't racist, they come down here to the south side!"

good stuff. when i'm there its usually just me and a friend and maybe a couple other anglers, and the seagulls. many of those guys that fish down there are true lake michigan pros.
Yea...Shad Raps are probably my new favorite perch lure lol. I was the guy who caught the brown trout btw.

Did you release it?
No...I would have, but it wouldn't have survived.

Where? Into his washer or into his dryer?
Phil can release it into the tide bottle and be a bottle head :) JK
Thinking of taking my boys Saturday morning to 63rd st.

i have been completely out of touch..

What do the piers look like for 'catching'..
