25,000 + sauger fingerlings were just put in the river at salt creek. I can get used to these new state sponsored stockings on the DPR. 20 years ago a state sponsored fish stocking the des plaines would seem like a far cry. Its about time they started noticing what a great ecosystem the river is becoming.

Cool. Any news on why they chose sauger over walleye?
Great question. I often heard the sauger variety is more a rough fish. That could be myth, I don't know for sure. I also wonder if Sauger is more the natural choice for the DPR. Like was the sauger here to begin with or was it a walleye stream. One thing I do know is I catch more wallys(not many) than saugers, so I'm happy about the choice. I do not eat the fish, but perhaps there is a taste difference. .

i assume they picked sauger since they are prominent in the Illinois River and the DPR is a tributary. some call Spring Valley on the Illinois River, the sauger capital of the world
I thought maybe there was a sauger clearance sale at the hatchery :)

That is some awesome news. I hope a few stick around the area and don't head north with the smallies
I've caught a few sauger on the DPR in the past and they all looked to be in great shape and some size to them. Thanks for sharing.

They stock sauger because their more available.Everyone in the state wants walleye.Unfortunatly the dnr is not high on the list.We had great sauger runs on the river for awhile. Now their virtually a non factor. This stocking should provide good base.
Maybe the county could help with some walleye
