The fish are hungry!

Went out the Des Plaines yesterday with my buddy and had a solid day. Out on our kayaks from about 8:30-12:30. Water is clear, low, but still moving. Weeds are starting to get to be an annoyance, but still fishable with non weedless rigs. Using a Rapala J-9, I got 13 Smallies and 2 Pike. My buddy got at least about half of that with the same set up. Nothing too sizeable, probably all in the 14-16" range, but no complaints here. That's not counting the half dozen or so that got off or missed on the top water. I always predominantly catch Smallies, but it was odd to not even get one Largie. The best miss was when I pulled the lure out of the water after retrieval, with a Smallie leaping out of the water to try and grab it. That's a fun day!

That's good to know, I was thinking it was a little early for "top water" action. I'm going to dust off the Rapala Skitter Pops.

Never too early for topwater. I caught a pike on a topwater near Gurnee in the middle of January.
