Bag limit is 10 and must be 14 inches. I release all that I catch. A 14 incher is hard to come by. Most are 8-12 inches long.
Apparently this fishery is on a comeback. I have been told that in years past it was fish every cast. Naturally it got abused and the Wildlife Commission had to institute a stricter bag/size limit.
The Flat River reminds me of the DPR but less trash in the water. Lots of lay downs, narrow, winding. Average depth is 8-10 feet, clay banks which are typical here. Water color is chocolate because of the clay. Flow is minimal. I wish there were pike down here they would have a ton of places to ambush prey. I rarely bass fish but I have had some good days when I do. A 4 lb bass would be a bigger bass in this water. I pick apart the lay downs with a weightless wacky rigged Senko or a fluke.
Its a fun place and never really crowded when I go during the week.
There are tons of channel cats. Never caught a big channel. I’m not sure if there are blues or flatheads.
Maybe I’ll commit to spending more time on it this coming season.
Sounds like a fun day! Glad the limit changes seem to be having a positive effect.
I still haven't been out this year. Normally get in a few trips before the new licenses are required so I'm gonna have to deal with the chilly weather and give it a shot this week!
I remember 10 years ago or so, my son and I were on the Rock River when the run was on... boated well over 100 in a few hours. Actually got tired of catching them.
Update: got out again yesterday @sun up. Trolled for a bit and then spent the next 4 hours searching. Never did find a concentration of white bass. I ended up with a paltry 5 with one being legal to keep. I released everything. Caught a super dink large mouth too.
Water had warmed up to 60.2 degrees from last weeks 54 degrees. We did have a front move in the night before. Air temps dropped into the low 40s from a previous few days of mid 70s. Maybe that shut them down for a bit. I hope the run isn’t over already because it is a great time to be out there.
