After living in Alaska for almost 30 years - some of it in a cabin he built himself outside of Fairbanks - my best friend suddenly relocated to Boca Raton. Needless to say there was a woman involved.

After he lived in FL for a while I asked him how he liked living there. He said, "I like it a lot - I can fish everyday. But there's one thing I don't like - alligators. In AK when I went fishing I took my 10 gauge in case of grizzlies. Around here, if I carried a shotgun I'd be thrown in jail. In AK you can see grizzlies coming from pretty far off but around here 'gators can sneak up on you without warning."

With the water on the Mississippi levee I see a dozen or so dinosaur sized gators every day when cruising the levee top in my ATV. They aren't a problem unless you are from up north and don't have any experience with them.

I fish some of the ramps that cross the levee and those killers will enter the water when I arrive and then hangout just watching and sometimes stalking me. When they submerge you have to watch what they are doing. If they reemerge a little closer to me I just leave. I own a mile of levee here in St. Gabriel, La and I could get 6 sportsman tags for these gators, but WTF do you do with a 12' gator. The big ones taste like ass and skinning one is a nightmare. I'll pass.

Things like shark, bear, alligator attacks are so rare they make national news with each incident. You could take all 3 of those things and count the yearly number of fatalities on one hand every year. Often the number is 0. Yet, approximately 120 people die a day across the country in traffic fatalities. Also take into account that if you have the slightest bearing regarding your surroundings, you will probably avoid an attack.

They are accustomed to the fisherman on the shore as an opportunity for an easy meal, once you get a fish on the line they will swoop in to grab it or you if you get in the way.

My thought would be to find a local processor to deal with the mess and cut a deal to split the catch if he does the processing. Make sure he makes a good boudin as part of the deal. I'm thinking some blackened gator tail as well. Some for now and some for the freezer. Mmmmm

Someone sent me this photo some time back.
