Busse tips for a newcomer

I'm thinking about heading to Busse on Saturday and it will be my first time fishing not just at Busse, but in the great state of Illinois. I'm somewhat new to these parts - I grew up in New England and most of the fishing I've done has been in Lake Champlain, so I like bass. I hear that Busse is a great spot for largemouth and I'm excited to check it out.

I'm wondering if anyone on here has general advice for someone heading to Busse for the first time. Where are some good spots to begin? I don't have a boat - is it worthwhile to rent a kayak/canoe to kind of scope out the whole lake? What do the bass go after around here? I've read the IL fishing regulations and the Busse-specific ones so I can avoid breaking any rules, but I could definitely still use some general tips about how to hook some nice fish at Busse. I'll be using a 6'6" spinning rod with 8 lb. test mono on the reel. Any advice you've got for a newcomer would be awesome, and thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome to the site. Wait for Bussejim or Jason to chime in. Renting the boat Busse is an option but I hear the batteries they rent for a trolling motor don't hold a charge. Don't park backwards at Busse or any other CFP unless that's your thing. Lastly sorry you got set from Lake Champlain to the Busse gulag. Good luck and keep us posted.

if you look on the first page in the busse section you will see many recent reports on busse with detailed info on lures and spots .my advice would be just go out and explore the shoreline and get a feel for whats there. The north pool has been hit or in my case miss. When fish are hitting it seems that rattletraps, red eyed shads, jerkbaits, and shallow cranks are the most common lures.

Nothing wrong with renting a boat to get a good look at things but first if I were you I would just use this site as a reference and go out there and walk the shore a little bit. Work the dams, points, dropoffs and weeds.

good luck .. welcome to the forum and hope you catch .... report back :D

Welcome to the site!

As you'll probably see from the Busse reports, i've enjoyed many outings at Busse Lake - both from shore and out on my kayak. Be sure to check out my Busse info page at... http://windycityfishing.com/busse-lake/
There's lots of general info to help you get started. There are also maps that include depths.

For the first time out there, it might be worth it just to look around and get a feel for the place. There is TONS of shoreline to work on all 3 sections of the lake. This time of year i'd take some RatLTrap baits and just cast all over. Find some depths of 3-6 feet with some nice green weeds.

The boat rentals are a bit on the expensive side (I don't have 2014 prices posted as of yet but I will find them out), but it's such a beautiful place to explore, if you've got a few extra bucks, it's worth it.

I seem to be catching less with my kayak than from shore, but thats because I am busy paddling around exploring all the spots I couldn't reach from shore. I would say save your dollars your first few times out and hit the shoreline starting at the north pool and work your way around to the main pool. There is very workable shoreline there.

All you need to do is get online to the cook county forest preserve district website and find the fishing guide with detailed depth chart maps. With the map and an array of lure types just hike the shore and have at it. All pools have bass. Seems near term crank baits and lipless doing best but fish can be had by other means. There isnt good water clarity at Busse so keep that in mind with lure selection. Get dirty, pick up some thorns, get you some Illini Bass.
