Can The Brakes on Abu Garcia Revo S Reels Be Adjusted?

I have a used Abu Garcia Revo S baitcaster reel (right hand retreive) but did not get an instruction manual with it.

I looked on the Abu Garcia website and found a schematic for the reel, but can't tell if it can be adjusted or how.

I would imagine the cover on the opposite side of the retreive handle is where it would be done, but how do you get that cover off? Is it done similarly like other reels where you just pull the various brake pins to make the brakes work harder or less hard? What is the default setting on this reel (how many pins are normally pulled out?)

Thanks in advance for your advice and info!

Yes, it can be adjusted just like any other centrifrugal braking reel. On the same side as the handle there should be a little screw. I believe it is on the top front. Loosen that and then on the opposite side turn the side plate of the reel counter-clockwise. That should do it.

I'll tell ya right now, I've got models S, SX, STX, and Premier, and everyone of them above the S is a much better reel! Some guys like their Model S, I don't like the brake system on it though. You definitely get what you pay for!

A little of both! It's just an all around better reel when you go from say an S to an STX. I used to not believe this (just last year) and then I used some of my friends better equipment and was hooked. Now I own about $3000 worth of rodsNreels! Ouch! :x

Yikes! And I thought fishing was a relatively inexpensive hobby.

Really, I've spend probably a couple of hundred this year on gear. It's more than I thought I'd spend, but yeah, you are right... as you try out better stuff, you do get hooked. (No pun intended.)

I believe all reels above the S use a magnetic brake assist, while the S uses the centrifugal. I prefer the magnetics, but do have a Quantum Accurist that I like with an externaly adjustable centrifugal brake. The magnetic ones seem to be smoother, and have a finer adjustment to them. I have an STX that works great for everything. I got the old model on sale for not much more than the S or SX.

Hey dude, you'd be AMAZED! :D I have my brakes turned way down or off depending on size of the bait, but if I turn them all the way up, they still cast great! The S seems a lot harder to adjust, and I know guy's will argue that Revo's are "picky" reels in the way of adjustments... I turned the magnets all the way up on an STX and gave it to my bro, who doesn't fish but a few times a year. He casted it just fine with no backlashes! Pretty cool stuff! Definitely check out a "better" Revo if that's the brand you like, there's some crazy good deals out there!
