Today was the maiden Deep Lake voyage. It was also only the second time I have been fishing so far this year. I fished from about 7:00 until 1:30. The weather was very nice. It started out sunny and then clouded over, which kept the sun from being too harsh on my lily white skin. I guess it's time to start the fishing tan season!!
Anyway, my initial plan was to mix in some finesse fishing with the thought that this early in the season the fish may be looking for an easy meal. Well that plan went out the window quick. After throwing some plastics for about 15 minutes I went the way every one else goes this time of year and starting throwing a rattling, lipless shad lure. That worked out well. I caught two fish on consecutive casts at about 7:45. The first one was about 17 inches, but it was bleeding a little so no pictures. The second was a bit smaller. After another hour I moved on to another section of the lake and picked up two more fish on consecutive casts with both being around 15 inches or so. I then ran into Tony and he had caught 5 fish at that point, but nothing very big. For some reason I then anchored and tried a bit of drop shotting which did nothing. By this time it was about 9:45 and although I had caught 4 fish I was hoping there might be more so I went back to the shad, which ended up being a fantastic decision. Over the next 4 hours I proceeded to catch 20 more bass. That's right, I said 20 more bass making the total for the day.......24 BASS!! I have never seen fishing this good in my entire life, let alone on Deep Lake. The smallest fish was 12" and the largest was a 21" beauty with another 20" big boy included. This was quite the accomplishment for me as I almost never fish any sort of crankbait. I am mostly a finesse fisherman. This day might be changing my tactics a bit. Unbelievable. So I brought 24 bass into the boat on this trip with another 2 bass that swiped at the bait and missed as I got it close to the boat. Out of those 24 bass, a total of 18 were 14" or larger. If only today was the tournament. And what makes it bad is that I won't be here next week for the tournament so consider yourselves lucky my friends!! Just kidding. Well, that's my story and I am sticking to it and loving it!
Here a few photos of the bigger boys.......
