Finally put my kayak in DPR. Did not venture to far - I started at I-60 and naively thought that I'd make a least to I-176, but the railroad bridge in Libertyville had too much current for me. Well, at least I now know my limits, and I did not tip over, did not lose any tackle and did not get skunked - saw some topwater commotion, tossed there and picked up a small pike.

Nice, congrats! My first was 2 weeks ago, ended up being an accidental night outing.... not smart for a first time!

Way to pop one Grain. One of the better sections to fish etween the train bridge and the S curve upstream of it.
Just could not paddle through the current under that bridge - it did not look like much, but it would turn me sideways every time. May be next time I'll get out of the boat and guide it through. Also, it felt like the float back was too quick and I need an anchor to stop and work the spots. And probably baitcaster next time.

Yes, it's kind of a small riffle there at low water. You're right, best bet would be paddle thru the eddy and walk it past the current. I imagine you already broke a sweat paddling over the area where the Hollister dam was recently removed. That would be next to that office building you passed.

Crazy how that current varies. I popped over to the river when I fished at Van Patten Woods in Wadsworth the other day. I cast a frog upstream and it didn't budge. Casted toward a bridge and I had to thumb the spool before the current forced a backlash.
