My son got a monster last year on a dead 8" mackeral. We ran out of roaches and he put the thing down a hole he just got a 34"er out of. 10 minutes later flag goes up and 38"er on the weird bait. Only had it with because he went with a bunch of guys on a tip-up party the week before in Wisconsin and they divied up the leftover bait. I think they gave him what nobody wanted but it worked. Single hook in the middle of the back. Won't forget that day anytime soon. 5 over 30". I always buy the biggest roaches they have.

2 hooks being a quick strike rig? I've seen a number of articles on using dead bait setups. I always wonder whether that is as attractive as a good sized sucker or shiner/roach swimming around. I bought a windlass tip-up last year and got frustrated trying to get it set right for the jigging motion to take effect. I plan to try again this year.

Hans, I am off next week starting on Wednesday (tentatively). I would like to do Defiance next week along with a trip to Zurich. - Mike
