Got out to the big lake today and was hoping to get at least a couple hours in before the gale winds started. I accomplished that task and got my first king (I think); a small male 8.4lber. Got out to the area and put on a rapala dt-14 in chartreuse with a purple back and a shallow rattlin rogue in fire tiger. The water temp was 57.7 to 59.7 and when I got out to 30-33 fow I started marking fish. I got no action on the first two lures so I switched to a shallow thunderstick jr in firetiger and a rapala dt-14 in fire tiger as well. That is when I got some action. I marked several pods of fish and when I went through one of these pods I stopped paddling for a and when I resumed, fish on. The littl fish hit hard and stripped some drag and I thought I lost him, but he was in the air and when he hit the water, the fight was on. He swam hard right at the boat and after a little struggle I landed the fish. I trolled down the lake a little more and went back into that pod of fish and had another hook up doing the same thing. This one hit on my big level wind reel and stripped off a lot of line. After about 5 mins, the rod snapped up and I thought the fish might have broke off but the lure was still there hooks and all. I don't know how the fish got off but it was awesome. The lake was building the whole time I was out there and by the time Navyfisher got there the lake was pretty much a no go. Not because the yaks could not take it, it was too hard to troll into the wind. I trolled the river with Navyfisher for a littl bit and called it. Got some action and was extremely happy.
Have to say thanks to thanks to you guys for all the information and assistance. Your information has helped me with catching a king from my yak. Navyfisher and Rob from lake michigan angler rock and thanks for taking me out! SpecialEd, Mplant, and all you other Lake Michigan guys too because I have read all of your posts and studied the lures you have recommended and in fact the firetiger thunderstick jr was just in a post I read last week. Thanks again and I hope to get some more before the end of the season. Oh ya, and here is a vid to check out as well.
