Hey everyone! New to the forum and somewhat new to the Fox. Moved out to Geneva last year and started hitting the river. Mainly fished at Fabyan and didn't catch much the first month but really enjoyed all the time spent in the river. After a while I found a nice honey hole while wading and it always produced small and large mouth bass. Either caught with a Manns 1 minus or buzz bait. One of my last outings I caught three largemouths I estimated to be 4-5 pounds each. For the first season on the Fox I like to think of it as a success.
Fast forward to this spring and I haven't caught anything. 3 dinks in random spots. My honey hole seems to have been washed away from the floods as I haven't caught anything out of that area yet this season. Been jumping around from the Geneva dam down to the islands north of Les Ardens. One dink on the Manns, zilch on the bazz bait, and one dink on a twister tail. Hitting log jams, below riffles, behind structure, and deeper pools. The only pattern I've been able to see is the few fish were caught at the front of holes right after a drop off.
So my question...what kind of strategy did everyone use when you first started fishing the Fox? Would it be more productive to just hit one or two locations and fish them like crazy and learn every square inch. Or did you find it productive just to wander blindly in search of holes? What kind of lure would be more productive, jigs (my technique is lacking) or something that covers a lot of area like a crankbait? Last year at Fabyan I didn't wander too far and stuck with the same lure so maybe I should stick with approach? Its a big and scenic river...There are just so many areas I want to try.
Please understand, I am not asking for specific spots as I've found its more rewarding when I find them as opposed to being led to them. It's just after a weekend of frustration, I'm starting to wonder about strategies on making my time more productive (and a lot funner).
Thanks in advance!
John
