I don't know if jerk baits are what I would say one should use to build confidence, especially at the goons. I'd go with some sort of wacky rigged worm, either a senko fished weightless or a flick shake on an appropriate jig head. If you are concerned about weeds you can go with a hook or jig head with a weed guard.
