Problems with lures...

Went to Lagoon #6 on 4/14 and caught some bullheads and largemouth bass on nightcrawlers.

For the life of me though, can't ever get a hit on lures. Tried swim jigs around fallen tree, weeds, any structure I could see. Tried shallow crankbaits casting out and reeling into the structure. Nothing worked - any advice would be appreciated!

Spend the 8 bucks or whatever on a Glass Ghost X-Rap, bass love em.. Don't burn up the water on the retrieve with that lure, pause a few times, make her swim to your liking. A lot of guys here are swearing on the Rat L traps right now, go for it with those two lures you should at least get a couple dinks if you cover some decent water. I'm thinking about rebuilding my confidence with an old favorite, the common White Spinner, judging by quite a few posts it seems to be holding its own as well. Hope this helps, remember confidence plays a huge role out there.

x2. I would also try jerking on a slackline with the x-rap. That has been the only thing working for me so far this year. In fact, I am falling in love with it like Ken G and his producto grub.

besides a few on spinnerbaits, the baby-1's and lipless cranks have killed em this year, must be attracted to the rattles but a spinnerbait is always my go to bait especially when nothing else works , thats what i learned on. useful in any condition , any depth and catches bass, eyes ,northerns, even channels(sometimes)

I haven't been able to get out this year much. After last year, I think a weightless Berkley power or gulp minnow on a plain old worm hook, cast out on either a ultralight spinning rod, or fly rod is the most effective artificial I have ever fished.

Before I started fishing this latest setup, my best lure for more than 20 years was a small 2-4" rapalla minnow.

The way I work an xrap from shore is to cast almost parallel to shore and then fan cast. You will get weeds on every cast especially as the year wears on. This year the weeds are already up because of the warm march. That is ok though. If the weeds are up just do more casting out into the lake beyond the weeds and as you retrieve and get closer to the weeds experiment but make more pauses. This may entice a bite from a bass sitting on the edge of the weeds. Also, you did mention some good structure but look for pockets in the weeds and target those areas. As we get into may try and use a jig or jig and trailer. Also target the areas that you have mentioned as far as downed trees and pockets in the weeds. When working a jig early season, I pop the rod aggressively and wait until later in the season for the typical lift and drop retrieve. Good luck. I have noticed good colors in x-raps and lippless cranks to be firetiger, sexy shad, and orange craw patterns in 1/2 oz. X-raps most success on olive/silver, perch, or hot steel #8 size. Jig and trailer pumpkin with dark green or black trailer also black and blue jig with dark green or black craw or creature trailer. Also, don't forget the weightless senko rigged wacky style in the weed pockets and around downed timber or other structure. Good luck, don't give up and you will get em!

I don't know if jerk baits are what I would say one should use to build confidence, especially at the goons. I'd go with some sort of wacky rigged worm, either a senko fished weightless or a flick shake on an appropriate jig head. If you are concerned about weeds you can go with a hook or jig head with a weed guard.
