I've heard often that there should be another USGS gauge that measures river flow between Algonquin and Montgomery. I found a chart that converts the gauge height reading at SE to a flow (in cfs). Hope this helps, guys...

Yeah, I probably shoulda explained it a little...

First you have to pull up the SE gauge on the USGS site: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/il/nwis/uv/?site_no=05551000&agency_cd=USGS

Then you reference the chart to get the corresponding flow reading: http://il.water.usgs.gov/nwis-w/IL/data.components//rating.cgi?statnum=05551000

Right now, The USGS gauge reading at SE is 13.81. The column all the way on the left of the chart shows gauge height in feet (shown in tenths of a foot). So scroll down until you find 13.80. Follow that line 2 columns to the right and you have the current flow in cfs. According to the chart a gauge height reading of 13.81 corresponds with a flow of 4170.

It made sense to me immediately and is very useful!

S Elgin used to provide a cfs reading, but stopped a few years ago. Since that's closest to where I fish, I was sad to see the monitoring discontinued. With government budget cuts, there is talk of cutting funding to a lot of this kind of stuff.

I was out wading yesterday. The river was still high, so I don't know about comfortable, but I would think within a few days the shallower stretches should be a comfortable wade.

STC looked perfect wade this morning but I didn't want to wear river water all day. Quality 411 Erik. Did you get my pm? If not next Sunday works best for me and I was thinking a early morning start. I'll call you to dial it in. Now where is that Eye Fellow???
