Stopped at Cabelas today to spend some points on lures I don't really need. One was a replacement for the X Rap I lost in the BWCA.

While I was browsing it occurred to me that most of the gear we buy comes from overseas.

Considering what might happen to prices when the great leader raises tariffs it might be advisable to stock up before he takes office,

Just a thought.

That would be a positive result but while companies ramp up prices will probably skyrocket.

Then of course there's the problem of what happens to our exports when other countries retaliate. I suspect farmers won't be too happy.

Interesting stuff. Hat's off to anyone who goes out of their way to avoid Chinese-made stuff. Unfortunately so much of the tackle gear we buy comes from there. Or Viet Nam or Malaysia.

BTW - anyone who thinks American businesses moved production to China in order to provide lower-cost goods to American consumers is delusional.

American businesses moved production to China to take advantage of lower labor costs which almost immediately goes to their bottom line, increases stock value which increases C-level incomes through bonuses. In other words, American businesses colluded with the American government to fuck American workers & make the rich richer.

And to bring this full circle, I wonder how many people who think they're avoiding Chinese crap drive Buick Envisions & Envistas? When GM almost went belly up in 2008 - after decades of ingrown, group think, poor management (read David Halberstam's The Fifties for more info on this) - the American taxpayers bailed them out & saved their asses (along with the rest of the US car industry). How did GM repay us? By exporting jobs to China to build their latest generations of SUVs (If you own one of these check the manufacturer plate on the door jam & don't be surprised).

This is why I will NEVER buy a new GM product.

Or maybe we will start seeing Made in the USA a little more often. Way too much of our goods are made overseas. Lots of injection molding shops around most are looking for new work.
Most likely what we are going to see will be schemes to bypass tariffs - if you are interested in how it's done read up on how Chinese manufacturers circumvent solar panel tariffs.

I am definitely doing that - there's some stuff that I buy from Ali that works as well as brand name gear.

Excuse my French but fuck the Chinese. When US companies moved production to China the commies insisted they sign contracts that forced the US companise to share their IP. So basically we've paid those assholes to steal our ideas.

I'm not sure but it might help explain why the stuff you buy from Ali works as good or better than US brands.

Few years back i wanted to buy a bottle opener for my beer. American made was the only criteria. I wanted to buy it just on principal. Turned out it was impossible to find it at all the stores you would think of to buy a bottle opener. Turned out i went to a metal fabrication trade show and found one stamped out of stainless steel from a vendor. However, I would guess that the equipment used to produce this “Made in America’” product was made overseas or at least incorporated foreign components.
I buy most of my rods from St. Croix. But there again they use Kagan reel seats and Fuji guides. I still feel good about the concept that some of the cost ends up in another American’s pocket.
Good luck finding any product that is produced soup to nuts with completely American resources.
One note regarding foreign investment by American companies. Our retirement system in the U.S. had evolved into predominantly relying on 401k’s. Long gone are the pensions from working for a company for 40 years, getting the gold watch and an income from money the company saved for you. We are now on our own and many of the investments in our 401’s are in foreign held entities. On the whole of it i will pay double for my fishing supples if i was convinced that they were completely “American Made.”
That’s enough. Where’s my beer?!!!!!!

Have a Guiness:D

And you can forget about Modelos & Coronas. No loss for me, I never liked them.

So what that means to me is that I'll be much more conservative on what I buy and how I spend my money.
Buy not surprised one bit that China will raise prices of their products.
