Fished the East Branch from Royce Road to Weber Road by kayak today. Wasn't expecting much due to the algae earlier in the spring, but had a great day. Weeds weren't nearly as bad and it is totally fishable. Landed two 16" and one 14" smallie, a 15" largemouth and two other smaller largies. Most were caught on a simple jig, 1/8 oz. darter head with a 4" single-tail green pumpkin grub as a trailer. Caught a couple on a Strike King Bitsy Bug with the same trailer.

Highlight of the day was hooking a monster carp. Dragged me around on the kayak for about 10 minutes and dodged two swipes with the net before it ducked into a downed tree and broke off.

The second big smallie was angry and not in the mood for pictures.

So do we need to change Canada from 'The Great White North' to 'The Great Smoky North'?

Speaking of name changes it seems we need to change Cormorant Island at Busse to Egret Island. There are way more Egret there than Cormorants - especially at the end of the day.

I think I saw you yesterday (I just got an oil change and heading back to the office around 9:00 am). I was traveling south on Rt 53 and saw a Subaru with a Tackle Warehouse sticker on the window with a red kayak on top. As soon as I saw you turn on to Royce I knew exactly where you were going with that kayak.

We live 6 blocks from the West Branch. I haven't touched that water since May, way, way, way too low and the weeds, not fun, even the deep pockets are shallow. My boys have been riding their bikes to the river after dinner and they have done decent with numbers (bluegills and small smallies).
