For the $ they are a good rod, but to say that they are the best rods ever....................

Try fishing with a St. Croix or a GLoomis and you will see what I am referring to.
Agreed.

There are a lot of great rods out there- St Croix, Loomis, Kistler, Powell, and Dobyns to name a few.

I think the Ugly Stick for their price, value, and function are a near perfect rod but they could never compare to the others we have mentioned for sensitivity and weight. Good fishing

I think the St. Croxis Triumph is around 70$.
I personally like the All Star ASR series. For a hundred bucks they are
a really nice rod.
Bucketmouth4,
I was actually thinking on buying this Rod at the beginning of the year, but was not sure if they were any good. I was looking at the All Star ASR series FROG rod. Witch rod did you buy from the ASR series? Thanks for the info.

I've never owned or used an Ugly Stick. I only have one Shakespeare rod, and that's an old UL "Ranger" model.

I am now hooked on the Cablela "Trail Tourney" rods, I've found them to be very nice for $70ish, and sometimes on sale for $30. To me they are just as nice as some higher end rods, and feel/perform just as good as my St. Croix rods.

.

Ive been using my 7 foot MH kistlers for awhile now, both casting and spinning. The spinning is my salmon rod too. Im thinking of getting a lamiglass rod for my salmon fishing this week but couldnt find one locally.
I have an ugly stick ultralight which would be an adventure to land a king with. Im still waiting to see one of those guys fishing with a can try and catch a king :)

Shimano owns G Loomis for the last 10 yrs so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Ugly Stick are not bad to beat my kids with  I like the lite models with the cork handle in a UL model

Ugly stick ice rods have a few and only use them for jiggin heavy baits or swat n flies in the summer.

I do see a lot of charters on the big pond using the trolling rods.

I'd LOVE to Jump into this conversation since I've been an ugly stick user since i started, i want to point out. This is my opinion and I'm NOT a Good fisherman ...just a weekend guy that loves the sport. And Rods and reels are all personal preference Don't let anyone tell you whats the "BEST" Right now ugly stick is your favorite And hey there still mine to!

that's a link to the rod i grew up using. GREAT Sensitivity and durability. I own a G-loomis ($280) And a st. Croix ($180) And honestly as much detail that i do pay attention to when i fish... the only difference is in the price your paying. now i'm not bashing the Loomis.. My baby is a beaut BUT As far as overall quality there mostly the same other then the weight. My Loomis is much lighter then my Ugly stick. But no don't go out and spend a lot of money on one of the "BIGGER" Names theres no need to. You can use the cheapest rod you want to all year and you'll still have the same opportunity's on the fish. Ugly Stick is your rod My man! Congrats eventually you may alter brands maybe not. You've come a long way since joining this site, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!!!! And keep that ugly stick by your side.

i got a medium fast triumph that i love. Seems pretty sensitive, tho its the best rod i own. Im prolly gonna get one or two more for my other combos that i dont like the rods.

I do agree with your philosophy George. While no one can argue the superior quality of a higher end rod, the rod alone does not catch the fish. An angler can have a $500 rod and reel combo and get taken to the farm by someone with a $100 combo. That is a fact. I look at boats the same way. Everytime out I see guys in their $40,000 bass boats that don't appear to be catching fish. They sure look good on the water though :p

you could real in a truck off the bottom with one of these "cheap" poles!!!There isn't a person alive that could convince me theres a better pole.i use a 5'6" ultra light ugly stick with a plain ol' spinner cast reel, with 8 pound spider wire mono on it and it doesn't break unless i want it too.(snags are the only reason i ever want it to break) anyways,i could and would recomend ugly sticks too anyone and everyone.no need to spend a hundred bucks on some fancy pole, ugly stick is the best! i caught all these on my ugly and a few more bigger ones i havent developed the pics yet, including a 25+flathead and a 10lb pike!

doc...one... not everyone has money comin out their ass to spend $200+ per rod... although i can see how you can talk down to a kid when you're a dentist and very easily making $100k+ per year and can spend whatever you feel like on fishing tackle. VERY mature of you man. Come on... you guys are soooo hell-bent on having the best tackle... the most expensive gear... when i guarantee you that a good fisherman would outfish you with a snoopy pole if he knows what he's doing. I've never spent more than $40 on a rod. I've never spent more than $70 on a reel... I've probably caught more fish than half the guys who sit here with their $200 rods and $500 reels... that think fishing will be easier with the "stuff the pros use" Jesus you people are gullible. I'd also like to point out the fact that I won't sit and cry a river when I slip in my boat and break a rod... or close the tip of it in the trunk/car door. I'll say oh well... and go out and buy myself another $30-$40 rod and be back on the water, while you guys are bumming around like a little kid because you just broke an eyelet off your $200 rod that fishes for you apparently. Honestly if you really think you need to spend that much money on gear to try and catch more fish... you should look into a different hobby because the gear doesn't catch em all... the fisherman does. Good luck with your $700 combos... I'll continue to use my $75 or $100 combo and outfish most people on the water. Thanks...
