I can't figure out what the heck I'm going to do with all of that Berkley PowerBait Trout Dough in my tackle box now....I guess just throw it away.
If you figure out what to do with it, let me know too. I have ~5-6 glass jars sitting around since 2001, which is when I learned the "secret of the play doh" LOL.

BTW, welcome to the site. I'm new here too.

I was being sarcastic about throwing it away. The trout will hit it. I should have been more clear when I started this whole mess; I have NEVER caught a salmon with play-doh. Every play-doh catch was a brown trout.

I used to fish in a pond and caught all of the blugill on everything from bacon to bare hooks. Go figure; the bare hook worked like a charm. Fish have a brain the size of a flea and a 2-3 second memory; I don't expect them to be all that smart about their diet.

P.S. I caught my first LM bass on a worm with a bobber.

well again, congrats and welcome. As someone stated earlier, it's nice to see some estrogen on this site. Here's a pic of my wife a few years back. She unfortunatley doesn't fish much with me anymore, as each progressive year fishing seems to get worse, and she only likes to fish when she can limit out

Edit: apparently I either don't know how to properly insert a picture, or I don't have a high enough post count. Link: http://www.new.facebook.com/photo.php?p ... 1050772091

What Hasbro says about Playdoh (They make it)

The exact ingredients of PLAY-DOH compound are proprietary, so we cannot share them with you. We can tell you that it is primarily a mixture of water, salt and flour. It does NOT contain peanuts, peanut oil, or any milk byproducts. It DOES contain wheat.

PLAY-DOH compound is non-toxic, non-irritating & non-allergenic except as noted: Children who are allergic to wheat gluten may have an allergic reaction to this product.

There is no MSDS sheet required for PLAY-DOH compound.

How to make a home version of playdoh:

The main dry ingredients for playdoh are usually flour, baking soda, cornstarch, and salt. The pigment is often added with food coloring, powdered drink mix, powdered tempera paint, or fruit or vegetable juice such as that from beets or pomegranates. Extra ingredients include alum and cream of tartar. Extracts may be added to give the play dough a pleasant smell.

There are many recipes for play dough with differing proportions. You may have to try a few before you find what best suits your purposes.

Here are some non-cook play dough recipes. They should be thoroughly mixed and may keep better if stored in an airtight container in your refrigerator.

2 c. (.47 L) flour
1 c. (.24 L) salt
2 Tbsp (29.5 mL) alum
1 c. (.24 L) water
2 Tbsp. (29.5 mL) cooking oil
food coloring of choice

4 c. (.95 L) flour
¼ c. (.06 L) tempera powder
¼ c. (.06 L) salt
1 ½ c. (.36 L) water
1 Tbsp. (14.8 mL) cooking oil

1 c. (.24 L) flour
1 small paper packet of powdered drink mix
½-1 c. (.12-.24 L)salt
½ c. (.12 L) water
1-3 Tbsp. (14.8-44 mL) cooking oil

Here are some cooked play dough recipes. They can be mixed in a saucepan and then heated on low to medium heat and mixed until they're thickened, using the desired type of food coloring. Remove them from the heat and when they're cool enough, knead them for a few minutes.

1 c. (.24 L) flour
½ c. (.12 L) salt
2 Tbsp. (29.5 mL) cream of tartar
½ c. (.12 L) water
2 Tbsp. (29.5 mL) cooking oil

2 c. (.47 L) baking soda
1 c. (.24 L) cornstarch
1 ½ c. (.36 L) water

1 c. (.24 L) flour
½ c. (.12 L) salt
1 Tbsp. (14.8 mL) powdered alum
1 c. (.24 L) water
2 Tbsp. (29.5 mL) cooking oil

What "How It Works" says about Playdoh:

Play-Doh compound can do all of this because of the interactions between its ingredients. The exact ingredients are a closely guarded secret, but Hasbro, the company that makes and distributes the compound, does reveal a few facts about its basic composition. The dough contains water, salt and flour. It doesn't contain peanuts, peanut oil or milk, but does contain wheat.

According to the current Play-Doh patent (U.S. Patent 6,713,624), the compound is essentially a starch-based binder mixed with water, salt, lubricant and preservative. To be more specific, it contains:

Water
Starch-based binder
Retrogradation inhibitor
Salt
Lubricant
Surfactant
Preservative
Hardener
Humectant
Fragrance
Color
Each of these ingredients has an effect on the compound's texture, fragrance and appearance. One of the major contributors to the softness and texture of Play-Doh compound is the interaction between its two primary ingredients - starch-based binder and water. To understand how the dough works, you have to know a little about starch and what happens when it comes into contact with water.

What about Trout Bait?

Made with real hatchery food. Features powerful, active scent ingredients, and fish attracting glitter.

What Berkley says about Trout Bait?

Smells and tastes like livebait. Scientifically proven to outperform salmon eggs and all other prepared baits. Fortified with the natural ingredients of traditional Trout Bait to boost the trout-attracting power of the Berkley® PowerBait® formula.

A Trout Feed Formula:

Fish meal 29%, Fish oil 16%, Blood meal 13%, Wheat 8%, Sunflower cake 7 %....................

What the heck is flossing or lining a fish?

Well it's basically a technique that is used while bottom bouncing. A long leader that is anywhere from 6 to 12 feet in length is used to sweep across the river bed as it drifts downstream with intentions of hooking a fish in it's mouth as the line acts like tooth floss. The line is often undetected by the salmon and so it shouldn't be as fish are not really biting out of hunger in river systems, but biting for protection of their territory against objects that annoy them.

Most anglers who are on rock and gravel beds floss because it's what they know and it provides a very productive way of fishing, although some anglers as well as conservationists disagree with it. Some see it as "snagging," where the fish are not being hooked out of hunger or even instinct really, but rather being hooked technically in the mouth - which is legal. Wether it's morally correct is up to the individuals fishing the water - they have to decide if what they are doing is okay for that fishery.

So in conclusion, playdoh is a "bait" to make your rig legal. But the fish are not eating it. If someone wants to hang it from a bobber and catch fish, go ahead, I won't. I'll use something more productive.

On another note, comparing trout bait to playdoh is crazy. If playdoh worked, I might as well use a slice of wonderbread on my hook.

Hello everyone, new member to the site, but not new to the salmon game. I saw this thread, and I knew I had to jump in and explain play doh to everyone.

Let me first say that migrating salmon do no eat. Their stomachs shut down and their internal organs make way for their reproductive stuff (eggs and sperm). So right away, you can say salmon don't eat. They don't eat fish, they don't eat bugs, and they especially don't eat play doh. Anyone who says migrating salmon eat play doh is a fool in my books.

Here's the real truth behind playdoh. It ONLY works with a bottom rig. You will never see it successful under a slip bobber in a harbor. For those of you who think salmon mistake play doh for floating spawn, you are wrong. The fact that you will NEVER catch a salmon with play doh under a float (but hey! you can still catch them with spawn under a float...) proves this point.

I REALLLY get a kick out of people who think certain colors work better than others. Hahahahaha!!!

I've seen the game. It's snagging, flat out. I'm not going to beat around the bush here, I'm going to lay it out to help clear any misconceptions you have.

You see, migrating salmon, especially those swimming up tributaries (such as the Pike!) swim with their mouths open.

What's the play doh rig? A lump of doh on a treble, and a sinker weight sitting on the bottom.

This is where to two tie together.

As salmon swim upstream, every now and then the salmon will run into the line that rests between the glob of play doh and the sinker. The salmon then FREAKS out and swims off. If the play doh is worked to perfection, the lesser of the weights (which is, you guessed it, play doh on a treble) will catch the fish in the mouth or the side of the head). Play doh is very effective for this legal snagging because its the perfect amount of weight to rest on the bottom and it breaks off enough to hook into a fish. Often times, play doh fools will reel in a fish that isn't even hooked! Just wrapped up in line...In VERY rare occasions salmon will have the doh in their mouths. Why? Cause in the middle of FREAKING out and GASPING for oxygenated water, they inhale whats near their face as they are wrapped in line as they gasp for air!!

I've demonstrated this in a rough illustration I have created in MS Paint. It shows how a fish will swim into a line with your typical play doh rig.

There are two types of people out there using play doh:

1. The clueless. They actually think fish eat play doh! They have a lot to learn!!
2. The people who KNOW they are lining the fish. heck, everyone wants to catch a salmon. I don't blame these people for wanting some action!

But the truth is, salmon don't give a crap about play doh. You're just snagging them or lining them as they swim upstream.

Wanna prove me wrong? Go catch a salmon in a harbor with play doh under a slip float. Then I will take you seriously.

You play doh people are a bunch of jokesters.

Sorry to introduce myself as blunt. For those of you who do know me, I provide quality reports and I share a lot of tips. Look forward to chatting with everyone here

Mike
